Pre/Post Natal Exercise

There are many benefits of exercise during pregnancy:

  • Maintenance of cardio fitness, muscle strength and flexibility
  • Maintenance of a healthy weight
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved coordination and body awareness
  • Preparation for labour and assistance in post-natal recovery
(As listed by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Research also suggests that women who continue to exercise:

  • Gain less weight
  • Deposit less fat
  • Feel better
  • Have shorter labours
  • Recover more rapidly

From the baby’s point of view, studies have shown a number of short-term and long-term benefits. These include showing signs of higher endurance during labour, a favourable heart rate and better behavioural responses.
Many common complaints of pregnancy including fatigue, varicose veins and joint swelling/oedema are significantly reduced in women who exercise.
The difficult question for you to answer is what exercise you should be doing.
That’s where we come in. Your exercise regime will be tailored to you as you progress through your pregnancy, and it will be adapted with every change your body goes through to minimise any risk and maximise the benefits.
